So, sometimes, when a movie is the way it is, it’s hard to pin point whether it’s the writer’s fault, the actor’s fault or the director’s fault. This is one of those movies. Considering that one of the writers, Jon Hurwitz, has been on board with this franchise since the beginning, I’m gonna say it’s not the writers’ fault this fault.

Something about this instalment just wasn’t nearly funny enough. This one was really primarily comprised of racist jokes and crude humour (cue penis stuck to icy pole akin to A Christmas Story (1983) tongue-to-pole version).

Personally, I think the lack of genuine enthusiasm for hilarity in this instalment came as a result of the actors (perhaps Cho and Penn are tired of the same old story over and over again) and the director. I am really confused how Strauss-Schulson was really allowed to take the reigns on this well known (and loved by stoners world wide) franchise. I had to google who he is, and he hasn’t really even done anything well known…or good for that matter.

Now, I’m not purposefully trying to be harsh, but I was definitely expecting more out of this and I was personally let down. The fact that the word “3-D” was involved should have been the big slap in the face clue that usually prevents me from spending money on utter rubbish. Alas, I let my friend pick the movie so, really, it’s my own fault. Sigh. There were some laughs here and there, but really, it fails comparison to its predecessors. I am personally very concerned about the comedy genre nowadays, but that’s a topic for a whole other post.

Silver lining- Neil Patrick Harris’ presence was once again, a blessing.

In short, if you wanna get high (NOTE: I am NOT condoning lighting up a spliff and getting absolutely stoned out of your mind…) and have a giggle here and there, go ahead and watch this. But, you won’t be missing a damn thing if you never see this film.

In theory, this started out as a good film. It was thought provoking, if you let it marinate in your head for a while. But, somewhere down the line, it miraculously turned into some sad sci-fi version of Bonnie & Clyde.

Timberlake is back on the screen as Will Salas. A poor guy living in one of the poorest sectors of a new society in the future  that uses time, instead of money, as currency. Some of you may be familiar with the book that the film is “adapted” from (I use quotations here because the writing credit is not actually given to the author, but to Niccol for the screenplay…but ideally the concept comes from the original novel).

Now, the idea of time as currency is brilliant. In the poor sectors, people can only live day by day, relying on the time they get paid at the end of a day of unsavoury work. And sometimes, you just don’t have enough time. Salas’ mother (played by Wilde), for example, doesn’t even have enough time on her clock to take the bus to meet her son. The driver wouldn’t even let her on and let Will pay the difference when she gets to the next stop. Of course, you can guess what happens next and yes, it was very sad.  So anyway, in short, Will is just given a century’s worth of time by some poor pathetic dude (can you sense my sarcasm here?) who decides to kill himself ’cause he’s “bored” and what not. He says to Will, “Don’t waste my time”. Then, we segué into Will deciding every one should have a chance and so on and so on- typical ‘social equality and justice for all’ type story. Along the way, he meets a rich girl played by Seyfried, who at some random point in the film suddenly decides she is now romantically involved with Timberlake’s character. Cue my “WTF” face (although it was indeed expected, but the build up was barely visible).

I didn’t like Seyfried for this role. I found her character to be daft and naive and in fact, quite unnecessary to the plot if it weren’t for her being the daughter of a very important character. Why do women often have to play such characters in film? Anyways! My point is, I feel Seyfried’s talents were wasted on this. She is one who should really stick to dominant roles. I hate to see her play second fiddle to a man’s character.  (Here is the film theory student talking…haha). Timberlake was as good as you would expect. Again, after The Social Network (2010), I do think he could have stretched his acting legs elsewhere, but hey, movie making is a money making business, right?

The appealing characteristics of the film reside with the visuals and the differences in social standing. For example, people who are poor (i.e. don’t have time to waste) are always in a hurry (and thus, are good runners). However, the rich never run anywhere- they have all the time in the world. They can sleep in and take their time to eat…do whatever they want. The visuals were striking even though looking back in retrospect, it was really mainly shades of grey and black…

So, what can I say? Overall, In Time was an alright movie. The concept was intriguing. I wouldn’t jump out of a plane to see it again though.  I generally recommend this to anyone familiar with the book, or anyone who is a sci-fi fan (though, there are definitely way better sci-fi films out there- cue Gattaca, 1997).

So, if there’s anything I’ve noticed about people who are obsessed with film, it is not enough to simply say “That was so good” or “That was so bad” when asked about a film. When in like-minded company, a full-blown discussion into the depths of every aspect of the film is not uncommon. However, among people who want a straight answer, you’re not so free to express every opinion. This is why I love my blog. I can go on & on.

I was one of those people who was very skeptical about seeing this movie because I have a disgusting love/hate relationship with Facebook. I wasn’t sure whether I could find myself genuinely interested and unbiased enough to watch this film objectively or if I could even consider using my money to see it. Anyway, the months rolled on and soon enough, the release date was upon me. I was having a bad day and naturally, I headed to the cinema to ease my woes. I knew that despite my aversion to Facebook, this film would be a must see, so alas, I bought my ticket, my popcorn and went along my merry way to enjoy the blessing that is the movies. I was not disappointed, not in the least.

The “history of Facebook”, so to speak, was interesting to learn about. Of course, it is important to keep in mind that this is BASED on a true story. Don’t watch it and think you know everything. But it was informative still. The Mark Zuckerberg I loved in the film is not the same as the real Mark Zuckerberg. The Eduardo I so deeply sympathized with is not the same as the real Eduardo Saverin. Herein lies the danger with movies, to tell you the truth. There is a disconnect between reality and ficiton. But! That is a whole other post that would take me forever to type up. Back to my review!

The script was well-written, hands down. What else would you expect from Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men)? But we all know a great script does not a fantastic film make. The directing was a gem and the acting was refreshing and enthralling. People who have seen Eisenberg in The Squid and the Whale surely knew this would be a film he could carry. However, I didn’t know what to expect of Garfield or Timberlake and in the end I was pleasantly surprised. Garfield is a young man I had only previously briefly seen in 2007′s Lions for Lambs. So, naturally, as is with my personality, I was immediately drawn to him since he was a talent relatively unknown.  (I am a HUGE sucker for unknowns). I think he was absolutely fantastic. He is a true natural on screen and emotes with such ease it’s a bit unnerving. Timberlake was much better than I expected him to be. It’s Justin Timberlake after all. I’d rather sit and listen to him woo me with promises of writing me symphonies and telling me the life lesson of how what goes around comes back around but eh, he is growing on me as an actor.

I am most pleased with a film when all aspects of its production are equally successful. The editing, score, direction, screenplay, casting, advertising…everything… was tastefully done. Speaking of casting! I nearly forgot to talk about Rooney Mara! Rooney Mara was what I felt was my little secret. First saw her in Youth in Revolt and the remake of Nightmare on Elmstreet. She beat out tons of more well known up and comers for the role of Lisbeth Sander in the currently in post-production American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The point is, she is no longer my little secret and she was perfect in this film. She, like Garfield, also possesses an unnerving ease with emoting. She really doesn’t need to try hard or at least if she is, we don’t know it.

I enjoyed how well put together this film was and the score was wonderful. It went perfectly with the film. I do highly recommend this if you haven’t seen it yet and even if you have, dammit, watch it again & again! A great film to watch on your own should you be feeling down in the dumps and are in need of some inspiration. Also great to watch with friends who love movies as much as you do.

OK, first of all, I refuse to believe this got a rating of SIX/TEN on IMDB. How did it get so high?

This movie was hilarious, and mostly not even for the right reasons. Keep in mind, I am writing this review nearly a year after seeing it and I can’t really recall anything significant about it besides a vague memory of something involving Jerry O’Connell’s penis and vicious piranhas.

To make it worse, I did see the 3-D version and as we all know, I despise 3-D. One day this opinion might change, but that day is definitely not today. This was obviously a film that relied on the whole 3-D gimmick/fad to make any money. The plot was so-so and the acting, ha. Eli Roth did an uncredited cameo, and for me, that was the best part.

Let me just cut to the chase- if you want to have a laugh with some friends and just let your brain not function for 88 minutes, watch this movie. However, if you’re looking for something not along those lines, don’t watch it. Save your money. The economy is improving but it’s not that great just yet.

OK, I don’t even know where to start with this.

I waited just over a year for this movie. Everyday, scouring all resources to find new information. Not a drop of juice was leaked. Finally, it came to me. It was on a Wednesday. I showed up an hour and a bit early, to make sure I got the seat I wanted (of course, most secluded corner possible). I waited, and waited some more, through painful after painful cheap Jamaican commercial ( “Wata with WOW!”) and then  finally…the lights dimmed, the score music amplified, diCaprio’s on the screen. It’s begun. I’m in heaven.

I saw this movie three times. After the first sitting, I thought “Oh my God! Oh my God? THAT WAS AMAZING….WAIT, what happened exactly? *confusion. THAT WAS AMAZING! But seriously…what the heck happened???”  After the second sitting, I was able to follow along and everything started to click and make sense. All the things they said in all the different sequences in the movie finally started to come together- in the beginning when Cobb was talking about a “virus”, the stability of dreams, Inception itself. Now, I could think about the complexities of writing such a script, to conceptualize such an idea. I had to see it again. After the third sitting, I was more or less finally at peace. Until I own the DVD, I will probably never completely be at ease. I loved this. I loved it. There are no other words to describe how I feel.

I am a huge DiCaprio fan. HUGE. The man is a monumental inspiration to all. Every time I watch a movie with him in it, I am amazed. When I watch a movie with him in it, I feel like, this movie is all that matters in the world. This emotion, this story. Every notion, every blink of an eye, every twitch of the lip. A work of art. (I mean, really, that’s how it is with every actor I greatly admire). He is the reason I knew about Inception for as long as I did. But, he is not the reason I love this movie. Just to make that clear. This movie, is a fantastical and successful concoction of themes, dreams, the chemistry among the cast members, and finally, the mind-boggling, inconceivable plot. Nolan is a genius. A mastermind without a doubt. I mean, Memento was amazing and entirely original, but this…this has no words. Memento was really just a taste. Of course, he did spend about ten years putting this thing together, and his hard work shows.

It was interesting to watch DiCaprio in such an active role, repelling down buildings, running from bad guys, strangling people. Even at such a successful stage of his ongoing (thank God!) career, DiCaprio knows how to change it up and remind us of his versatility, his chameleon abilities. I am also a HUGE fan of JGL. Seriously, ever since he did Manic, I’ve been a hardcore supporter of everything he’s done.  I’m happy to see him dive into such a great mainstream film. His fight scene (completely throwing off your perception of stability), was so smooth. It almost like he was swimming underwater. He is cool and suave as Arthur. And, he looks damn good in a shirt, vest and tie.

Like I said though, this movie reached far beyond its actors.  The magnitude of the imaginings of Nolan’s mind is a hard pill to swallow, but its after effect is ecstasy. The visuals were flawless. The concepts were seamless. This movie…was near perfection. I say near because I don’t want to jinx anything. You can tell how carefully it was put together, how carefully each moment was thought through. Basically, you can tell the director cares. Not even just the director, but everyone who took part in creating this movie- the cinematographer, the sound editor, everyone.

I don’t want to tell you the plot because I don’t want to give it away. I want you to see it and find out for yourself. In a sentence, Cobb (DiCaprio) assembles a skilled team to infiltrate a man’s mind to put an idea there (“inception”) because that is the only way he can finally go home to his kids. There is also a sweetly emotional facet of the story surrounding Cobb, his wife Mal, and his kids. The ending will have some sort of effect on you, that’s for sure. Fortunately, me telling you this bit of information actually tells you nothing about how they go about inception, the lack of convention in architecture and gravity, or how it begins or how it ends. You have to trust Nolan. You do. You have to trust every word he has written and you have to trust the characters when they speak them. You have to listen. You have to focus. If you do, you won’t get lost in limbo. This movie raises all kinds of questions about the mind. The next time you dream, it won’t be the same. Ever realize how your dreams never really have a beginning? Stay calm. Breathe.

Inception supersedes all conventional notions of place and time. It will rock your mind, to put it simply. You will laugh, and think hard, and dream big. I don’t want to jump the gun here, but Nolan has to get some kind of nomination for this screenplay. Has to.  Here’s to dreaming.

Before I begin, I just want you to acknowledge the fact  that there is a solid chance that if anyone else had played Evelyn Salt, this movie would have gotten a lot less of all those good ratings. BUT! Because it is Angelina…I mean, the role was even originally written for a man! It’s strange, because even some of the best critics comment on how the plot had more holes than a sieve, yet gave it good ratings. Can you imagine having all that power and effect? Way to go, Angelina.

That being said, there isn’t really that much to comment on besides how good Jolie was. That, of course, goes without question (as much as I would like to, but really? That would be a lie and I’m not going to criticize her talent just to be different).

The plot has so much complexity that there is no way there wouldn’t be any holes. I also can’t really give you a brief summary of the plot because that would give the whole thing away! It was very Run, Lola, Run meets The Bourne Identity meets V for Vendetta.

One thing I HAVE to point out though, is the fact that they did not portray the President of the United States accurately. HELLO! He’s black now, people! Get with the times, gosh. This must be the first movie to not feature Obama accurately in some way (whether it be a black actor or just a mention of his name on the fake news à la Tranformers 2) since his inauguration. What up with that?

Anyways, this was one of the better action flicks of the summer season. A part of that might be because Jolie worked with Noyce before in 1999′s The Bone Collector. Except! I do think the fighting scenes could have been a bit better, especially if Jolie’s frame didn’t seem quite so frail. She’s still super stunning though.

They didn’t hold back on the violence or the high-octane action. Jolie managed to redefine parkour, jumping from truck to motorcycle or from wall to wall down an elevator shaft. I was also very pleased that they didn’t use sex to complete the movie either, even with the sex symbol that is Jolie. Well done.

I liked it. I had a good time. And the ending definitely suggests a sequel. Watch with your pals or fellow Angelina fans if you enjoy a good action movie.

The film presents to us a great character study of people who are troubled, disaffected and trying to adjust to lives none of them planned for (already this is my kind of film).

The story centres around Roger Greenberg (Stiller). He is 40 years old and has just been released from a mental institution. He’s gone to live in his brother’s house in California for a few weeks to do “nothing” with his life for a while. Greenberg is a ‘professional’ carpenter, but was meant to be a rockstar. He has some difficulty (and that’s putting it lightly) dealing with his life as it is, and battling himself at the same time. It made me, as both a viewer and someone who has felt that way in my own life, feel entirely empathetic. Consequently, I laughed with him and felt awkward with him and felt angry with him in every moment. This movie was almost like some kind of visual therapy and a slap in the face about what happens when life gives you lemons.

I’ve read some reviews where people complained about this movie lacking a ‘plot’ and ‘closure’. I’m not complaining about these things at all because, quite frankly, that is truly how life is. There’s no real plot until you’re dead. Then, and only then, is there finally a beginning, middle and end. Greenberg gives us an honest picture of how life does not always turn out the way you hoped it would, and how you can lose yourself because of that. You lose yourself and become a miserable, out-of-touch kind of person. But you have to find your way back, piece by piece and friend by friend, until “you finally embrace the life” you never even wanted in the first place.

Gerwig plays Florence Mar, Greenberg’s brother’s assistant. The story actually starts with her. She is slightly awkward and somewhat unassertive. But she is open and kind-hearted, which in the end is what I think Greenberg likes about her. She is quirky as hell, that’s for sure. But even though her life isn’t what she’d hoped for either, she handles it differently in comparison to Greenberg. With more grace, but not necessarily a happy attitude. All you need to know is that she has her own problems. Her relationship with Greenberg is kind of unorthodox and often emotionally abusive. There’s a beginning to their relationship, but it isn’t very clear. It just kind of happens. Unexpected. No build up. Then there isn’t really an end. It’s great. It’s honest, most importantly.

Ifans (who I really like, by the way!) plays Ivan. Ivan’s life is nowhere near what he was hoping for. But he copes with it with a very charismatic, unassuming awareness that you can’t help but admire.

This film is characteristic of Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale). Typical of dysfunctional people trying to operate in an unbelievably functional world. So, keep in mind it isn’t for everybody. If you like films about dysfunctional people and don’t mind how uncomfortable they can sometimes make you feel, I think you will really like this movie. It’s also funny at times, but in a cynical, witty, underhanded kind of way.

If you liked Girl, Interrupted, The Other Sister, How to Be, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Wrestler, The Royal Tenenbaums or Sideways, you will probably also really like Greenberg. I recommend you watch this alone on a particularly cynical, oh-the-world-is-ridiculous kind of day by yourself, or with a friend who has a similar outlook. ENJOY!

So you may have remembered me posting earlier about how I was going to write a review about a documentary. I chose this one as my first to write about because high school is a universal and often painful topic that everyone can relate to because we have all been through it at one point or another.

American Teen is a documentary about that vital senior year in high school for a selected group of individuals attending a high school in a small town in Indiana. Each individual fits into a different social group.Personally, Hannah was my favourite. You’ve got your popular girl, your nerdy guy, your athletic guy and your ‘inbetweens’. Do you remember what you were in high school? I’m pretty sure I’ve gone through all social groups possible and maybe even invented my own.

This documentary actually addressed the sexting issue long before MTV. I actually cried when the issue arose because of the way people were treating the girl who sexted. They called her phone leaving disgusting messages and ostracized her at school. The popular girl (Megan) actually sent the email of the girl’s sext to EVERYONE, and laughed as she did it. Wow. It bothers me that she still got accepted to the university of her choice (and a good one too), despite the way she treated people. What the hell happened to Karma man?! We really have to be careful as children of the age of technology, because like celebrities, nothing is private anymore. Your pictures, a text you send a friend, an email. Once it’s out there, it’s technically not even yours any more. It sucks. It really does. So if anything, this is my warning to everyone to be careful about the stuff you are putting out there on the internet! You don’t want your future-boss to pull out a picture of you getting absolutely wasted and wild at a party a few years back in the middle of your hopeful interview, do you?

The ups and downs of love were also explored (ah, heartache), as was the battle between chasing after what you really want to do with your life and going to school where your parents want you to. These topics were particularly explored in Hannah’s case. She even ended up hanging out with a guy called Mitch, who was in the popular group. He liked her too. Of course, until his friends didn’t accept her. Typical.

I really enjoyed this because it gives us multidimensional perspectives from different types of people. Who would have guessed the cool athletic guy actually has things to worry about? Apparently he does, though. He really does. I just hate the title though. Seriously, it’s not just ‘American’ teens that go through the hell that is high school. *cough- Secret Life of the American Teenager* So, to the filmmakers out there planning on making either movie or TV show about teens, keep that in mind.

At the end, there is a little reel on how the kids are doing in the present day. It’s cool, really. I’m not just a dork. Check it out if this is your sort of thing. I think if you liked Elephant, Thirteen, or The Breakfast Club (yes, I know none of these are documentaries, but American Teen has the same flow!) then this might just float your boat.

OK, so, FIRST OF ALL, let’s pretend that the director’s name isn’t actually ‘Nimród’ (HAHA). He directed 2007′s Vacancy and 2009′s Armored. It’s not that he’s bad or anything, but you would think that considering Predator being a popular franchise, that they would have gotten a more experienced and more suitable director. Perhaps someone more accustomed with the franchise and the action associated with it.

The best part of any action/adventure or even a horror flick to me is the comedic relief. There was a good amount of comedic relief in Predators, especially once Laurence Fishburne showed up – “How many seasons have I been here? 7? *looks to the side* What? 10?…We’ve been here 10 seasons“. Uhm, who ya talking to there, Laurence? Yep, he has some of kind of imaginary friend. A little Gollum-Sméagol complex happening in there somewhere.

You know the plot already- humans are dropped on a planet to be hunted by the Predators like as though it’s a game reserve. They are dropped on this planet every “season” via parachutes. All of them wake up mid-fall. Can you imagine that? Waking up falling at God know’s how fast and you have to be quick enough to think MUST OPEN PARACHUTE! I mean, I probably would have just started flailing and crying, so props to them. Anyway, the Predators don’t only hunt humans. The bigger ones hunt the smaller ones, and then they all hunt the humans. Of course, you already know that somebody must survive. But I mean, the fact alone that someone survives just seems so ridiculous because there is literally NO WAY off the planet, and there are more of the Predators than humans.  Invisible Predators! I mean, the last scenes of the movie I just kept thinking, how is it that there is suddenly just one Predator? What happened to all the others?

I mean, don’t let the logistics of it all deter you from seeing it. There is some enjoyable action and it is new to see Adrien Brody in this kind of role. I know he did King Kong (2005) and this was kind of like that in terms of him being in a jungle and what not, but his character in Predators is very ‘every man for himself’ and brooding and serious and all of a no-nonsense army man. I really like Alice Braga and have enjoyed watching her since I first saw her in 2007′s I am Legend. She is really good at getting those tears in her eyes and delivering a sensitivity, but tough-skinned quality to the women she portrays. What can I say about Topher Grace? His character’s background is surprising and I’ll leave it at that. You’ll just have to watch the movie to find out.

In conclusion, my final verdict on this one is that it was another fun action/adventure flick to revel in, especially for the fans of the franchise. If you aren’t a fan of the whole GET TO THE CHOPPAH! or the WHAT AH YOU? (compliments of Schwarzenegger), then you could probably do with just waiting for the DVD or the Starz! movie premiere. But, it was really fun to watch and made me nostalgic for the 1987 original. It was sufficiently more gory and I don’t know if it was just me…but their faces seem a lot more frightening.
